What is rut in road?

Ruts are a common problem on roads, especially those with heavy traffic or heavy vehicles. They are depressions or tracks that are worn into the surface of the road due to constant pressure from wheels. Ruts can form over time on roads made of asphalt, concrete, gravel or dirt.

Ruts can make driving dangerous and uncomfortable, causing vehicles to swerve or lose control. They can also cause damage to vehicles and contribute to wear and tear on tires, suspension, and steering components. Ruts can also become filled with water during rainfalls, turning into a major hazard in terms of hydroplaning.

There are several causes of rutting, including high traffic volume, heavy loads, and improper road construction. Poor drainage and wet weather conditions can also lead to the formation of ruts.

Rut depth is usually measured in millimeters and depending on the severity, appropriate maintenance is required to fix the ruts. Repairs could include resurfacing or reconstruction of the road surface. Regular maintenance is essential to ensure that ruts do not become a major hazard on the road.
